The Evolution of Anime Styles

For many modern day anime watchers the evolution of anime goes unnoticed; the animation styles of anime have changed greatly since the release of what was considered the first anime, Imokawa Mukuzo Genkanban no Maki, released in 1917, drawn by Ōten Shimokawa who is deemed as one of the ‘Fathers’ of anime. The film ran for 5 minutes compared to the average run time now, which can last from anywhere between 20-40 minutes. Topic of the Month: Free Will- Does it exist or is it merely created by our subconscious

The existence of free will has always been an ago old question in Philosophy but it wasn’t until a few decades ago that it started to question the minds of many famous psychologists such as Skinner and Freud. However, in the world of psychology there is an alternative view to free will: Determinism.

 

Determinism is a more radical view and perspective in an attempt to counter-balance the view and existence of free will. Before we move on with this discussion, we need to be aware of the definitions to both sides of the argument. On one hand determinism is the view that an individual’s behaviour is shaped and/or controlled by either internal or external forces, and on the other, free will is the view that our behaviour is determined by our own will rather than by other forces.

Godzilla: Its Evolution in Western Cinema

It all started in 1956 when “Godzilla, King of the Monsters!” was released, Directed by Terry O. Morse, which was adapted from Ishiro Honda’s “Godzilla” released by the Japanese company Toho in 1954. Despite receiving a negative review from the New York Times, it was a success at the box office grossing $2 million in the US alone.

Seven years later, the second installment was released in North America, “King Kong vs. Godzilla”, also directed by Honda and was slightly less successful in the box office, grossing $1.25 million. This made the production company suspect that Godzilla wasn’t necessarily meant for western audiences.

The year is 1984. Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin, two high school Students from Santa Monica, California, decided to start making video games, founding Jam Software. Their first project was a skiing game made for the Apple II - Coded in just one weekend and sold for $250. Five years later with several games under their belt - made for the Atari ST, Amiga and PC - the two decided to rebrand and drop their relationship with their previous publisher Boudville; and so Naughty Dog was born.
